stairs combines imagery from a family reunion in the Texas panhandle with photo etchings based on staircases revealed during the renovation of a hospital in my neighborhood. When a section of the building’s exterior wall was removed, the sides of long-hidden staircases became visible, exposing layers of construction, wear, repair, and use – their geometric forms and surfaces marked by time. The staircases function as records of movement and passage. Worn edges, exposed structures, and accumulated traces speak to the countless lives that once moved through these spaces. Similarly, the imagery from the Texas landscape reflects histories of labor, family, and change embedded within the land itself. It brings together architectural and personal histories, reflecting on the ways places absorb memory and how evidence of use remains visible long after the original moment has passed. The work considers the beauty found in aging structures and the stories embedded within surfaces shaped by time.
