kein durchgang takes its title and imagery from the German street sign for “no passage.” Created while living in Germany and working as a master printer, the series marked a temporary shift away from printmaking and toward painting. Much of my creative energy was devoted to helping other artists realize their work, leaving little desire to produce prints of my own. The signs initially drew my attention through their formal qualities – bold geometry, limited palette, and direct visual language provided a simple structure. Repeated across multiple panels, the familiar symbol became an opportunity to explore variation within a constrained form. The imagery carries unavoidable associations with interruption, limitation, and blocked movement – barriers, boundaries, and paths that cannot be followed. Each painting became part of a larger investigation of form, rhythm, and the meanings that emerge through repetition.
