kith, kin + smoke trails explores family histories shaped by migration, labor, land, and memory. Drawing from archival photographs, family stories, historical research, and material traditions, the work traces connections between my Scottish ancestors who worked in the South Carolina textile mills, the labor of women and children, the histories of indigo production, and the landscapes that carried these stories forward. Domestic objects become vessels for inherited narratives, asking how personal histories intersect with larger cultural and historical forces and what remains with us across generations.
